“Driving Innovation” – 2011 Bosch Power Tools Asia Cordless Race China Qualifying Race Launch

Following the success of the 1st “Cordless Race” Competition in 2010, Bosch Power Tools officially launches the 2nd “Cordless Race” Competition and scales it to an international event covering five countries in Asia. China qualifying race is launched in March 21, with attendance of more student teams from more universities. Two Chinese winning teams will enter into the Asian final in Beijing, competing with other eight student teams from other four participating countries including Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and South Korea.

“Cordless Race” Competition is an important part of “Students Motivation Program”. The event aims to encourage and inspire creativity and innovation among the young generation. In accordance with the competition requirements, participants will design and produce vehicles by using Bosch Lithium-ion cordless impact drills as the drive of the engine. Then, the teams will carry out road tests for the vehicles’ power system, stability and security. Based on the test results, ten teams will enter China qualifying race held on May 18th in Shanghai.

Bosch is the first company applied Lithium-Ion Battery Technology to power tools. Its lithium-ion battery is not only capable of delivering four times longer lifetime than similar technology in the market, but feature intelligent power management. The specially developed cells with very low internal resistance ensure very little energy loss during charging and operation. Moreover, Bosch patented Electronic Cell Protection (ECP) reliably protects the battery against overload, overheating and deep discharge. The Bosch Lithium-ion cordless power tools will provide the required power, performance, speed and lifetime for the vehicles in this competition.

“With the company slogan ‘Invented for life’, Bosch Power Tools continues to increase the input into cultivating creative capacity and practices of university students. Last year, we launched ‘Students Motivation Program’ including “cordless race” competition, internships, funding and scholarships among colleges and universities. It gets a good response. We hope to host a second ‘Cordless Race’ Competition to further stimulate the growth of creative talents.” said Mr. XD Wang, General Manager of Bosch Power Tools (China) Co., Ltd.

“We designed and developed our vehicles during the competition. It is a process that inspired innovative thinking of me and my teammates. Vehicle production process does not only provide us with real opportunity to apply the theory into reality, but also improve our operational capability. And internship experience at Bosch laid a good foundation for my employment in the future. ‘Cordless Race’ Competition provides us a good bridge from theory to practice and school to the community. It improves our overall ability.” said Ding Zhiwei, the winner of 2010 “Cordless Race” Competition from Beijing Institute of Technology.

At present, participating teams are very much into the preparations. Some have completed the test of vehicle power system and started the vehicle design, production and installation. From early May, the teams will carry out three road tests for the vehicles’ power system, stability and security. Based on the test results, ten teams will enter China qualifying race. Experienced engineers from Bosch Power Tools will give full technical support during the competition.
